BoA getting it wrong in Holden
So, the Bank of America in Holden recently repainted the entrance to its parking lot. In the process, it got the arrows wrong in all the ways possible.
In this view, we're facing Main Street.
- Left turns form Main Street into the BoA parking lot are prohibited. Nevertheless, there's an arrow on the parking lot showing how to make that left turn.
- Coming out of the parking lot, only right turns are allowed. Therefore, there's an arrow for a left turn.
- Both of those arrows are on the wrong side of the island.

How to lose a sale and win a customer
While cutting firewood this weekend, the chain slipped off the bar on my chainsaw. In the process of re-
tightening the chain, a small clip and, I later learned, a bearing fell out of the sprocket assembly and into the underbrush. I took it as an omen to stop work for the day. I put the chainsaw into the back of my car.
I went back to Holden the next day to tend to a few other errands and brought the chainsaw to the repair place near our house, Parker Power Equipment. They have worked on other saws before as well as our lawn mower and snowblower.
The young man behind the desk looked at the saw and said that they don't always have the right Stihl parts in stock, that I might do better to go a Stihl dealer such as the one in Worcester. I had errands in Worcester, so I went to the dealer. They had the parts and installed them at the counter.
Both places did well, but Parker did better. They said that losing this sale was better for me, the customer. They were right. My chainsaw could have been with them for several days while they tried to get the right parts for this simple repair. They earned my loyalty as a customer.

Feeding birds by way of ice
A few weeks ago,we had small amount of snow and ice. We also did not have any sand or ice melt. Son Mike and his crew were making repairs on our house. Mike used bird seed to give some traction. It worked pretty well.
Last Monday, we had more ice, so I tossed more bird seed on the ramp and driveway. The ensuing warmth and rain washed away the ice, leaving the seeds. Birds large and small are taking care of the rest.

Don't eat lunch alone
Last night I attended a gathering of our local chamber of commerce. I like these folks. Most of the people there are trying to build small businesses that let's them do things they're good at. For some people, it's banking or real estate. For others, it can be a store or a services business or goodness knows what.
We talked very little about doing business in the sense of trying to work out a deal. We talked about how we helped other people solve problems. I talked as much about my grandkids as I did about WordPress, Cat5 vs Cat5e vs Cat6 cabling, or state and federal trademark law. I talked with a nursing home administrator about the discussions she'd been having with an about-to-be college graduate, with a bank branch manager about how electronic banking was giving him and his staff more time to spend on customer service, with a realtor about finding a volunteer opportunity for her teen-aged son. I had a good chat with a guy who called me Gary about the effect that the warm winter had on local businesses.
Toward the latter part of the gathering, I saw John DiPietro. John and I will be giving a LinkedIn workshop for the chamber in a couple of weeks. After talking about the workshop for a bit, John mentioned the interesting results he was getting from posting questions on LinkedIn. His most recent question, Going out for lunch vs eating at your desk, was bringing comments from around the world.
He then noted that, if you're eating lunch at your desk, three bad things may happen: 1) you might spill food on your computer, 2) you'll miss a chance for some exercise, and 3) you'll miss a chance to talk with some. "Go out. Have a cup of soup. See what happens."
In this world of virtual work, it's easy to overlook the opportunities for face-to-face contact. Even if the people around town aren't working on the same things that you are, they're working on something interesting and living lives that offer something important.
I stayed for a while longer, talking with a web designer about developing sites for multiple platforms, particularly for the smaller screens on mobile devices.
When it was time to leave, I waved to the guy I'd seen earlier.
"Bye, Gary," he said. "Thanks for coming."

The Telegram and Gazette has run an excellent series of articles about public access to police logs, including a helpful video narrative and details about how area police departments responded to requests.
Holden did well. My regular Crime in Suburbia series, by way of The Landmark's police report, depends on the good work of our local police departments.
The response by the local state police was discouraging. The paper noted that Lt. Col. Tim Alben, commander of the agency's Division of Field Services, has followed up with a directive to troopers in his command, reminding them of the very clear state laws regarding police logs.
These stories are a part of the paper's participation in Sunshine Week.
Kudos to Thomas Caywood, Gerard F. Russell, Noah R. Bombard and Scott J. Croteau.

The irresistible impulse of retailers to anchor their businesses to holidays or themes shows up this week in premature back-to-school promotions. Even with temperatures hitting their stride, it's never too early to diminish kids' summertime joy.
Walgreens puts their sales on the first page of their local weekly ad.
Rite-Aid exercises comparative restraint by sneaking theirs onto the bottom page.
Only CVS wins the point by having no back-to-school sale yet. Instead, you can get free gas with your high-fiber cereal.

A few years ago, our neighbor was in a panic. A turtle had been digging in her yard and was now laying its eggs in the sandy soil."What should I do?" the neighbor exclaimed.
Nothing much, I replied. The turtle had made its decision and wasn't about to be moved. When the turtle had finished her duty, she covered the clutch of eggs and went back to the stream and pond nearby.
This year, we've seen several test holes where the same turtle has been shopping for a new nursery. There's one in our yard on a banking and another one in another neighbor's flower bed. I haven't found the final location and probably won't. The mother looks to be too serious to chose a spot where someone might complain.

1st Worcester race
One of the better tenets of good politics is that, when your opponent is making trouble for himself, keep quiet. That seems to be what Kim Ferguson is wisely doing as Ken O'Brien thrashes around.
The latest troubles come in an exchange of letters to the editor in the local outlets. Last week, former selectman Joe Sullivan wrote a letter to The Landmark outlining the reasons that he could not support his former colleague, O'Brien, in the race for state representative in the 1st Worcester district. Sullivan concluded
I'm not in a position to evaluate the validity of Meyer's claims or O'Brien's defenses. Those are left to the court. I would suggest Mr. Meyer, however, to make sure that he spells Mr. O'Brien's name correctly. Lines such as this get confusing:
Ken O'Brien is working hard to get elected. I've seen his signs prominently placed throughout the district. I've seen him campaigning early in the morning at the intersection of Route 2 and 140 in Westminster. He has the endorsement of people whom I respect.
What he's not done, however, is address the series of very serious issues concerning his attitudes and actions throughout his time as selectman in Holden. He's responded with ad hominem attacks of his own. That's not a way to establish credibility. That's not a way to get my vote.
The candidates for state representative will debate on Thursday, Sept. 30, at 7 p.m. at the Holden town hall.

Meyer has file suit in Superior Court to have O'Brien produce the documents.
A nice guy? Yes. A great candidate for state representative? No way.
