More on food, medicine, and health

I just finished Barbara Ehrenreich's Bright-sided: How the Relentless Promotion of Positive Thinking Has Undermined America, in which he takes apart the Happiness Industry. In brief, after being diagnosed with breast cancer, Ehrenreich found herself surrounded by people with pink ribbons whose relentless cheeriness alerted her to something more sinister.
Being 'positive' will bring health and prosperity, we're told. More often, however, it misdirects our thoughts away from a understanding of our facts and any real attempt to effect change in our lives.
Recent research, Chronically ill people 'happier if they abandon hope', say docs • The Register, shows that we might wind up truly happier if we accept our condition than if we struggle against it.
In the meantime, however, our food industry tried to bolster our immune system by touting the Medicinal Effects Of Cocoa Krispies. To their credit, after being outed by USA Today, Kellogg pulls immunity claim. Now we can have our breakfasts in peace, so that we can worry about what else we're eating.
The 10 Weirdest, Grossest Ingredients in Processed Food | Health and Wellness | AlterNet
In case you hadn't suspected by now, All Medicines Are Poison!. Meaning, of course, that all medicines have side effects, with some more severe for some people. We can't know, with any measure of certainty, however, how those percentages apply to us. If we do experience side effects, sometimes there are treatments for those symptoms. There, too, you have to take your chances.

Dilbert.com

One more thing. You might be tempted to research your symptoms on the web, also known as Medicine by Google.

There's a good chance, however, that you'll wind up another disease instead. A London Times reported defined cyberchondria as "the deluded belief you suffer from all the diseases featured on the [I]nternet."

What's eating you?

There have been several stories in the news regarding diet and one's risk for depression. This isn't surprising. Depression, at its most severe, is one of the most debilitating, intractable, and expensive conditions to treat. In its milder forms, it's often treated successfully with various therapies and/or medications.
Wouldn't it be great, then, if we could find ways to reduce its severity and duration or, even better, prevent depression before it starts. Adding or removing some foods from our diets, it would seem, might be an answer.
We've long heard that oils from fatty, typically cold-water fishes are rich in omega-3s which, it's believed, can relieve depressive symptoms. It turns out, though, that it's not quite that simple. There are, we learn (Nutrition and health: Food, glorious food | The Economist), two types of omega-3 oils - long-chain and short-chain. The long-chain, primarily from fish, are the ones that do us the most good and are also the more expensive. Short-chain omega-3 oils, derived from plant oils, aren't nearly as effective.
A study published in the British Journal of Psychiatry concludes
that people who ate a diet high in Mediterranean-style foods, such as pulses, fruits, nuts, cereals, fish and olive oil were 30% less likely to develop depression than those who ate less healthy foods.
via Mediterranean diet 'can help stave off depression' | Society | The Observer
(Pulses is another word for beans.)
It seems simple to conclude that a Mediterranean diet supplement with cold-water fish ought to be part of a depression prevention program.
Except that, olive oil includes omega-6 which can negate the beneficent effects of long-chain omega-3 oils. The Economist concludes " those who buy omega-3 supplements that also contain omega-6s are probably wasting their money."

Another study released this week shows how junk food diet 'can give you depression' | Mail Online. Well, it doesn't quite say that. The study says that people who eat more processed foods have a higher risk of depression. The researchers conclude that these dietary habits are predictive of depression and imply that the processed foods themselves are causing depression. I'm not sure. (The full text of the study is behind a subscription wall, so I can only rely on the news reports.)
For example, I'm having a heck of time parsing this item
Although the researchers cannot totally rule out the possibility that people with depression may eat a less healthy diet they believe it is unlikely to be the reason for the findings because there was no association with diet and previous diagnosis of depression.
I suspect that the study's authors and certainly the reporters are confusing causation with correlation. It's not surprising that people with depression would have bad eating habits. When in the middle of depressive episodes, most folks are lucky to put on clean clothes, let alone make sure that they're getting enough veggies.
And, while we're at it, another study indicates that happiness is overrated anyway.
An Australian psychology expert who has been studying emotions has found being grumpy makes us think more clearly.

You might have wondered ...

A few weeks ago, some of my wife's co-workers remarked that I'd been cranking out a lot of commentary on Facebook. By way of explanation, things that I post in this blog and commentary that I send via Twitter are also posted on my Facebook page. So, it's not as though I sit in Facebook all day and night, writing stuff. That would be creepy.
Any way, that stream has slowed considerably during the past couple of weeks for a number of reasons.
  • I picked up some contract work. Although the amount of work that I've needed to do has been modest, I've had to invest some time in infrastructure:
    • selecting and installing a source code control system (settling on Mercurial).
    • getting virtual images of various other operating systems, including Windows 7, running on my laptop.
    • writing a few scripts to handle routine tasks. I'm not a programmer, so progress is slow.
    • tripping over an annoying bug in the latest version of Ubuntu (the Linux operating system that I use on my laptop). The mouse will stop responding to left-clicks at seemingly random times. There's some evidence that there's a problem with Flash, but there's been no definitive diagnosis, let alone a fix or workarond.
  • We've been sick. We didn't go in for tests, but we're pretty sure it's the thing that everyone's talking about. Last night, I heard a Massachusetts public health official state that they hadn't found any cases of any strain of flu other than h1n1.
  • I'm taking a course on business law. We had our mid-term exam a little while ago and the pace of assignments has picked up. We have a quiz this morning. Note that I'm writing instead of studying. Easily distracted? Me?
  • Adding to the distraction, we've pulled a couple more boxes of our old stuff, stuff from my mother, and stuff from my father. It's interesting to dig through those old pictures and papers, to see the world from that perch again, to try to look forward at what might happen, instead of looking back at what the heck happened.

Those are my excuses and I'm sticking to them.
