  • What good is it to be Pope if you can't bring your cats with you?

Cat Lovers Appreciate Soul Mate in Vatican - New York Times: "Italian media reported that when the pope moved into his papal quarters, he could not bring two beloved cats — notwithstanding the protests of Rome’s animal rights commissioner, who urged the Vatican to “give the two papal cats access to the Apostolic Palace.”"

    The shopping news isn't good.

Wal-Mart, including Sam's Club, is limiting the amount of rice one can buy at a time. Maybe this sacrifice is a chance to show solidarity with the less fortunate in this world.

    Ready for winter

An old, old lefty speaks out

"I hope that we shall crush in its birth the aristocracy of our monied corporations, which dare already to challenge our government to a trial of strength, and bid defiance to the laws of our country."

Quotes: "The Aristocracy Of Our Monied Corporations"

A barefoot walk through the edge of the 'burb

We learn from this article, Shoes are Ruining Our Feet, that barefoot walking is the best, something I've known and practiced for a long time. This time of year, our tootsies are emerging from the shoes and boots of winter, so the first long walk of the season is apt to be a slow one. It's ok because, on a fine day such as today, there's no better place to be than out and around.

Weather forecasters have a window rule: before you go on the air, look out the window. That way, you're less like to call for a sunny day if it's cloudy outside. Well, the window rule has other applications as well. For example, there's a road in town called Birchwood Drive. The person who named the street should have had a look outside. There you would see no birches, at least none of the white birch trees that we'd expect to see. Plenty of oak, maple, pine, and other varieties, but nary a birch.

We take blessings when and where we can

Among the stacks and boxes o' stuff that threatens to engulf us all, I found an old newspaper, a copy of the Gardner News from 1965. Beef liver was 33¢ per pound. You could advertise for a woman to do house-cleaning. Drew Pearson was still writing the Washington Merry-G0-Round. And, there was Blessing of the Throats service at the Roman Catholic church in Westminster.

    Stomp at the Hanover Theatre

On Saturday, Sandra and I saw Stomp at the newly renovated Hanover Theatre in downtown Worcester. I'll just park my truck full of superlatives at the curbside for your perusal.

These folks saw several shows: 4-rilla is for real!: STOMP at The Hanover Theatre A 2 Sided Review.

In many ways, the physicality, musicianship, and teamwork reminds me of the Kodo drummers, whom Adam and I saw 10 or so years ago.

And, on that note, Happy Birthday, Adam.

    How excited can we get?

Anatomy of an Ikea product | Crave : The gadget blog

The nearest Ikea store is more than an hour away and the roadways are not particularly fun to drive. So, we've only been a few times. Each time, however, we've been quite impressed by the store and its products. The shopping experience, I have to admit, is not for the timid. The place is lively, loud, colorful, and confusing, but, at each turn, there's something fun and interesting worth buying.

Ikea designs and builds most of its own furniture. This article, Anatomy of an Ikea product | Crave : The gadget blog, describes the design process and shows how they make good stuff for us and a boatload of money for the company.
