Finding the FEMA app

According to TechCrunch Federal Emergency Management Administration  (FEMA) has released an Android app just in time for for Hurricane Irene. You can install the app directly from the Android Market website.
Or, you can do as I did and search for the app from your phone. When you search, the Market app offers suggestions based on other people's searches. So, ...

I know what I was searching for and I found it. I suspect that the other folks who searched weren't as successful, online or off.

Mashable says old people don't like social media. Old people say, "Get off my Farmvville."

The Pew Internet Project reports that 65% of adults who use the Internet use social networking sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, or (yes, it's still around) MySpace.
That's what their headline said.
via 65% of online adults use social networking sites | Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project
But, when Mashable picked up the story, they reported
Only 50% of U.S. Adults Use Social Media
Mashable went on to say
But they’re less than ecstatic about it. In a word cloud that the study made to show responses to the question “What is one word that describes your experience using social networking sites?” The most common answer was a standard “good.”?
Pew, however, thought that adults were happier:
Overall, positive responses far outweighed the negative and neutral words that were associated with social networking sites (more than half of the respondents used positive terms). Users repeatedly described their experiences as “fun,” “great,” “interesting” and “convenient.” Less common were superlatives such as “astounding,” “necessity,” and “empowering.”

Hurricane Irene: French toast with cabbage

We've all heard about the French Toast alert level - the urgency with which people buy eggs, bread, and milk when a storm's coming. Added to the French Toast has been the advice to stock up on cabbage - cash, in the case that ATMs are down because of power or because so many people have taken out so much cash.
Usually, the French Toast system is used for winter storms, so an August alert is something new. We've had credible information for a week now, indicating that Irene is a serious storm. Not epic, but serious. The folks along U.S. 20 don't need any of this, those who are rebuilding after the June 1st tornado.
We're going about our business, removing loose objects from the back desk  With 5-10"  of rain the forecast,

some of our neighbors might want to make sure that their gutters are ready for the deluge.

Tech news headline or Pogo dialog?

This morning's GigaOM (one of the very best tech news sites) included a story with this headline:

The headline appears to be in English, but we might need some help.
For those of you who care about such things, Erply, an Estonian software company, is offering products that will allow businesses to collect payments on iPads. The company offers a somewhat traditional attachment (aka dongle) that allows the merchant to read the magnetic strip on credit cards and charge the customer for the purchase.
NFC stands for near-field communications (not the National Football Conference), a newer and sexier feature available on some mobile phones, that allows the customer to pay for products by holding their phone close to a receiver. Payments by mobile phone are more common in Europe and Asia than in the U.S.
But, back to the headline. Here's how reporting was done in the days of Pogo.

Can i complain one more time about HP printer softrware?

I needed to install an HP printer driver. at a customer site. The system, as I later learned, in part as a result of receiving this error, had other problems that needed attention. The error message that the HP software displayed, however, was a bit opaque:

WHDH News - too happy to report the latest news

We usually watch the 10PM news on Fox 25 because a) it's good to yell at the TV before going to sleep, b) we're not going to stay up for the 11:00 news and c) it's the better of the two Boston offerings. Charter offers a 10PM news show in conjunction with NECN. We don't yell at them as much.
Last night, there was a football game on channel 25, so we watched the WHDH news instead. Yikes.
One quick example. They ran a feel-good feature about the guy in Rhode Island who offered up his Starbucks card.
The anchors offered a smarmy, Yankee-Candle-scented commentary about paying it forward. They didn't report, however, that they hadn't bothered to report that the service was being shut down by Starbuck's as of 7PM PDT yesterday (10PM Boston time).

    Job creationism

The Wall Street Journal reports uncritically on a U.S. Chamber of Commerce study (PDF) that shows how state labor laws help or hinder job creation.
According to the 116-page study, Massachusetts is ranked in the lowest of three tiers for job-creation friendliness. The list includes the usual suspects: most of the Northeastern states, the industrial Midwest and, of course, California. Favored states include Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Kansas, MississippiNorth Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, andVirginia.

If, as the study concludes, the goal is job creation, then let's have a quick look at the most recent unemployment figures. According to the May 2011 report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Northeast is doing best of all of the regions in the country. .How's Massachusetts doing?  7.6%. Not the best, but better than Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, MississippiNorth Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas, . Of those favored by the Chamber of Commerce, only Kansas, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, andVirginia. And, let's not forget the Virginia is the beneficiary of a lot of federal spending.
The Chamber rates favorably those states which do not have labor laws, such a plant-shutdown notification, overtime provisions, or higher minimum wage laws than those specified by federal law.. The Chamber likes Texas.
Factors contributing to the state’s “good” ranking:
    • Strong right-to-work protections
    • State law prohibiting political subdivisions from enacting higher minimum wage
    • Overtime requirements set by federal law
    • Strong support for at-will employment doctrine
    • No state WARN-type requirements beyond federal law
According to David Drumm, writing in Rick Perry’s Job Creation Miracle on Jonathan Turley's law blog, Texas has parlayed a high percentage of minimum wage jobs with little or no health insurance coverage into a job-creation myth. The state is also running a $27 billion budget deficit.
Mike Masnick at Techdirt notes in Politicians, Innovation & The Paradox Of Job Creation that the entanglement of politics and job creation is far more complex and that, further, job creation quite often comes as the result of some profound earlier job loss. (Telephone operators losing thee jobs even as the telecommunications industry is booming.)
In addition, Ayla Rosen at BostInnovation reports on a University of Nebraska-Lincoln Bureau of Business Research study that concludes New York Tops 2011 State Entrepreneurship Index, Mass in at #3.
Politicians and chambers of commerce like to boost job numbers, even if those jobs are low-paying, go-nowhere positions that are vulnerable to the next wave of economic and technical innovation. It makes headlines, but doesn't build a good future.
